Playing with Cousins

While I was in Washington DC for work, Bobbins and the girls spent some time with her brother Mike and his family in San Diego.  The girls enjoyed playing with their cousins Abby, Mikey, and Anna.

Instructive

I was reading this book, New Deal or Raw Deal, which shows how FDR's economic legacy has greatly damaged the US over the long term, and saw this quote from Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morganthau in 1939:

"We have tried spending money.  We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work.  And I have just one interest, and if I am wrong ... somebody else can have my job.  I want to see this country prosperous.  I want to see people get a job.  I want to see people get enough to eat.  We have never made good on our promises. ... I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started. ... And an enormous debt to boot."

Quite instructive for our own times.  As the book makes clear, it was only WW2 that brought us out of the Depression.  All of FDR's alphabet soup gov't programs and huge spending prolonged the bad economy, despite what's taught in the history books.  We are heading down the same road now, but hopefully not the eight years part.

Blocks

My grandmother had these blocks at her house for us grandkids to play with, and occasionally I'll let the girls get them out.  Of course, they need dad to help them build a good structure.

Sunday at the Beach

Before we hit the beach Sunday, we went to Mass in a pretty nice church in Carlsbad.
It was much sunnier from the previous day.

Saturday at the Beach

Even though it was overcast and a tad chilly, we couldn't resist the beach late in the afternoon (after the girls got some shopping in).

"Test of Fire" and "Pro-Choice"

A little melodramatic, but agree with the main point of this message (youtube video by a [new?] group named Catholics Called to Witness).  There are non-negotiables.

The Democrats are proudly pro-choice, as reflected in their convention's platform, but just in case you were wondering, "choice" means only one thing, not freedom to choose in general.  Video from reason.tv.

MM's Legoland License

MM got her Legoland driver license the morning of our visit.  She didn't quite have the coordination to push the petal and steer at the same time but almost did a whole loop.  Somehow I'm sure she'll master it soon enough.

The Girls and Their Legoland "Friends"

In an effort to appeal more to girls, Lego has created a line of "Friends," and this includes several of the Friends singing and dancing in a little show at Legoland.  We just happened across the show and the girls LOVED it.  They didn't want to leave after it was over.

The video tells it all

Legoland

I had heard from a number of people that Legoland is better for young kids (under 10), so we decided to test the theory on our trip.  We agree with the theory.  Though overcast and too chilly for Bobbins, we had a great time.  MM's favorite ride was the Coastersaurus, which she rode 6 times.  Coach and I enjoyed the large raft ride (MM did NOT - the wall of water when crashing at the bottom freaked her out).  We also enjoyed looking at the various Lego displays (esp. the scenes from each of the 6 Star Wars movies).
